Hello all,

Thank you, Cicero, for returning us to Derrida. Such a return not is  
unrelated to a discussion of TBT's engagements with the critical  
prefix, trans-. We have in fact imagined passages from Derrida's *Of  
Hospitality* as crucial for defining our understanding of TBT as a  
humanitarian gesture at times appealing to a "higher law doctrine,"  
one grounded in various conceptualizations of transcendental -isms. In  
particular, I/we am/are haunted by the implicitly repeating "Yes" of  
the below passage as it relates to the specificities of a pre-and  
post-NAFTA border military industrial complex, both confined to the  
U.S.-Mexico divide, and, as architect Teddy Cruz indicates, extending  
like a necklace of conflict along a latitudinal faultline... Derrida  

Let us say yes to who or what turns up, before any determination,  
before any anticipation, before any identification, whether or not it  
has to do with a foreigner, an immigrant, an invited guest, or an  
unexpected visitor, whether or not the new arrival is the citizen of  
another country, a human, animal, or divine creature, a living or dead  
thing, male or female. (77)

For the moment adhering to a limited focal range--to the context of  
the U.S.-Mexico border (inevitably, to the context of "greater Mexico"  
as that border stretches South to the Guatemala-Mexico divide and  
North to encompass the United States' rapidly shifting  
demographics)--we, of course, appreciate Derrida for other reasons,  
too, his attentions to the "total speech act," wherein and whereby we  
recall/amend others' characterizations of the U.S.-Mexico border as a  
multi-"state-sponsored aesthetic project." In all sincerity, we have  
come to read the viral coverage of TBT, the investigations/audits of  
the project as Phase 1 of the project's implementation (vis a vis the  
limited lo-fi technology of language, the trans-dream of a border  
counter-aesthetic accountable to "a politics of the question").

Our own question (connected to hospitality) is deceptively simple:  
what constitutes sustenance? We'd wager minimally, water. But,  
likewise the aesthetic... which is to say: this is something like  
trying to think literal and imaginative geographies simultaneously,  
like trying to reconcile "The season of dying" (the name given to the  
frequent summer months of crossing) and "the privilege of unknowing"  
which choreographs top-down U.S. immigration policies and homeland  
security. Until the state and neoliberal globalization can be read  
widely as themselves "terrorist assemblages," the transitivity that  
TBT seeks to re/present is one of a queer accounting, a poetics of  
dislocation to interrupt business-as-usual.
