Hi Wes,

I totally agree. Although a field in full development and expansion, AR is not yet in the mainstream. Cultural theorist Ulrik Ekman is right to observe that “if you have had to explain to somebody what a ‘mixed reality’ [or AR] is and what its cultural ramifications are likely to be, you will probably have met with certain difficulties—on both sides of the exchange.” :)

Ulrik Ekman, ed., “Introduction,” Throughout: Art and Culture Emerging with Ubiquitous Computing (Cambridge, Massachusetts: The MIT Press, 2013), 13.

Horea

On Wed, Jul 15, 2015 at 2:40 AM, WA Watters F <mendrevin@epdo.cc> wrote:

----------empyre- soft-skinned space----------------------
Agreed, and thank you for mentioning these examples. Augmented reality is here, but augmented reality that is simultaneously immersive and mainstream is not here yet, partly because of the challenge of making affordable, inconspicuous, lightweight, high-res, head-mounted displays. It's like William Gibson said famously: "the future is already here -- it's just not very evenly distributed".

And I take the point about Second Life. But until, by some other means, we are able to conjure a 3-D animated model of the solar system, and walk through it with fellow avatars who have 'teleported' from around the world, and who are disguised as tentacular dinosaurs with iridescent plumage, all while standing on the central peak of an ancient Martian crater, I will insist that Second Life is not obsolete just yet. ;)
