<p>hi everyone,</p>
<p>in response to dan's invitation to share projects related to
networked collaboration, distributed storytelling and digital
community, i would like to give an update on what's happening with
UpStage.</p>
<p>some of you will be familiar with the online performance platform
UpStage (<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext"
href="https://upstage.org.nz/">https://upstage.org.nz/</a>) as
we've been around for quite some time - the platform was developed
in 2003 and launched in 2004, and since then we've had series of
online festivals and many other performances, online workshops and
other activities. UpStage is a tool for artists to create
innovative live performances that combine features including
audio-visual conferencing, chat, animation, audio, live drawing,
and more. performances often mix online and proximal spaces, and
encourage active audience participation. it's an accessible online
space for storytelling, creating, performing and playing.<br>
</p>
<p>in recent years the platform started to get a bit old &
creaky - geriatric really, in internet time; & it was
dependent on flash, which was state-of-the-art in 2003 but is now
all but obsolete. we've known for some years that a complete
rebuild of the software was vital for the project to continue, but
it proved extremely difficult to find funding for a truly global,
independent, artist-led open source project. happily, this year we
received funding from Creative Europe & the rebuild is now
well underway. the new platform will be launched in september 2021
with a performance series called "Mobilise/Demobilise", which is
an artistic collaboration between UpStage, Schaumbad Freies
Atelierhaus Graz (austria) and Teater InterAkt (sweden). after the
launch, the new platform will be available for artists to use for
their own work.<br>
</p>
<p>if you would like to know more about UpStage and the
Mobilise/Demobilise project, here are some links. the software is
open source so you are very welcome to get involved in that via
github, and we have mailing lists for announcements and
developers, that you can join from links on the UpStage website.
you can also write directly to me.</p>

<p>i wish you all a peaceful festive season & a "guten rutsch"
as the germans say (i'm in munich) - literally a "good slide" into
the new year.</p>
