>hello all
as someone who has run five different contemporary art spaces all funded mainly
by government the question of copyright and artists fees become one of my
primary concerns.one instituteion i worked for wanted to start an digital art
collection,i think they are still trying to work out how to go about this in a
way that would be equitable to artists.
once an artist has developed a cache with institutions and different media they
may feel comfortable in asking for a fee and copyright.an emerging artist is in
no position to make too many demands.most would gladly forego all these
considerations just to get the gig.
sooo whilst artist must be aware of their rights in relationship to these
issues it is up to them if they want to enforce them.real pressure must come on
the institutions to do the right thing, gods knows what you do about artist run
initiatives, feral net groups and the whole idea of a net underground.
as grant applications become more like business plans, real pressure from
boards is exerted to cut costs a number of times i faced a hostile board when i
tried to impliment australaian council guide lines on artists fees.
contemporary art practice has this strong element of hip hop of which sampling
is intergral appropriation in more art speak terms.this tromps all over
copyright yet we all feel free to do it. i am only just discovery the code
pirates and the digital bandits.
bloody hell its just all too complicated for a simple painter.
cheers
