[-empyre-] permission to quote?

antoanetta and list hi,

i just got an email from someone enquiring about quoting some postings from
the list for an article they are writing.. and if they have to approach the
list as a whole or just the individuals.
and i'm not quiet sure what is the position of this is under copyrite law ?

is all that's necesary attribution (referencing the posting without asking
the individuals permission) because posting to a list is coinsidered in the
same way as being published in a book..? or shopudl the individuals
permission be sought.
and im wondering how other feel about thier posts -which often seem like
they are in a small private community and are not always composed for public
scritiny, being open to possibilities like being quoted out of context of
the discussion they were in , etc etc or are we all happy to have everything
we say online be in open public space? (it is already publically archived
online)

along the same lines i been asked about the possibility of doing a project
later in the year which involves editing some discussion from the list on a
specific topic ..i havent approached anyone yet as its only conceptual at
the moment and may not ever happen, but it does provoke the same questions
about attribution and permissions.
