Re: [-empyre-] why not shoot the messenger

>The US army invented the internet as a medium of remote communication when on ground. I can't help but think that the original intention for the
medium has limited its potential.

I'm curious.. why is this so? how has it limited its potential? Its seems to me that commercial self interest is what is limiting the potential of the net, with certain monopolistic operating system and telecommunication companies seeking to maximise profits at the expense of anything/anyone else.

>Why not shoot the messenger? The messenger does not satisfy my experiential or creative needs. Nothing wrong with shooting the messenger then.

the messenger points beyond the screens surface, leading the observer into the virtual construct of the artists mind... shooting the messenger means you are unlikey to get the message, and instead be distracted and dissapointed by the low poligon count or the 8bit mono soundtrack.

Artists have to learn to work within the constraints of their medium of choice, to understand it and make the most of the available potential and seek to expand the boundaries of creative and experiential possibility.

>Think again.
>Many speak of immersive technological experience but the only
immersive experience (I'm thinking get in there and roll in it dirty
immersive) I have truly experienced is the experience of desire...

a broadband net connection helps, along with a new dual G4, a 64" plasmascreen monitor or virtual goggles, a body stimulation suit, one of those new "smell recreation" chips and some really good acid would be a really good place to start... provide these to me along with a team of 16 top digital artists and programmers and 6 months, and I'll give you an immersive experience you will never (be able to) forget!

>it is the promise of technology that has failed.
> promise of something better, something truly wild and wonderful, the promise of accessibility, the promise, THE PROMISE that has failed us.

I don't remember technology promising me anything... only glib carbon based marketing agents and idealistic dreamers(like myself)... the web is something better, it is truly wonderous, much more so than any of us can fully realise... I wouldnt criticise a newborn child for not living up to its potential... it hasnt failed us, only some of our impatient expectations
