[-empyre-] art and death
From: valerie Indeed - I love speculations on the future.
Being the last person on the planet I installed an mp3 recorder and
converted a CD by Linda Gibbs. Altho only an acquaintance she was a good
friend of my friend David, and last year she lost to cancer at 45. Loved to
see her perform, she was the best American to sing Kurt Weill I knew.
The fetish of the physical object comes from both a desire for cultural
longevity and a capitalist market that trades in objects. After all, culture
exists thru its dissemination; the burning of libraries caused the end of
culture in various histories (Maya, Babylon, etc).
Its for this reason I think Rhizome is such a waste of the future. The
database of things no one will see. In 5 years Apartment will disappear. I
really dont care a whistle about being on their database - what I care about
is the interview and review of Data Dynamics on Mobilegaze. That is
something that will last as opposed to a social club of cool people.
So its stunning that recorded music is the great new cultural expression of
our time. At no other time were the songs of a culture recorded and played
to such a close approx. The works in Slovenia, the sound was the most
interesting.
So Linda, coming thru the mp3 player on my computer.
