It is true that early web works were mainly based on text but browsers (Mosaic,
Netscape, IE) were supporting graphics, sounds, etc. Graphics, sounds were
restricted because they were heavier files and meant a time cost for the
viewer. However, some early works including graphics were based on downloading
time, created a lot of expectation, and were very effective, I think, like Life
With Father by Joseph Squier, for example.
