[-empyre-] Regulations
Fellow Empyreans,
All this talk of over regulated societies makes me wonder whether people
would rather live in Singapore or in a relatively unregulated country, like
Afghanistan. I doubt there would be such wonders as net art in less
regulated societies. What do you think?
I suspect that regulation is not inherently good or bad, it depends on the
motives of those regulating. If regulation is utilized for the protection
of people, and the advancement of civilization then it is likely good. If
regulation is used for control, despotism, or greed then it is definitely
bad. Regulation itself is likely neutral.
One could easily make a case for more regulation of corporations. It is
easy to show that it is in fact an environment of transnational anarchy that
permits contemporary corporations to exploit people and the planet. I
personally believe that our emerging global culture, a culture to which net
art makes a significant contribution, will be hampered unless and until we
abandon the fetish of national sovereignty.
Sorry for straying a bit OT. I hope it contributes to the overall dialogue.
Best!
