[-empyre-] falling off thoughts
I will be offline (mostly) until after this topic concludes. (I am going
to explore a new landscape to live in...) I have enjoyed my time here, (on
this list, and in Sacramento California, which I will be leaving soon...),
and I look forward to catching up with the conclusion of the conversation
upon my return to the wire.
One thing that I dearly hoped would happen here was that we would collect
some of the art-historical threads relating to GIS work, as well as
identify more current practitioners. I think I mentioned in my opening
statement that GIS is a somewhat lonely area, badly in need of a better
network. But of course, there are many predecessor artists and works out
there, more than any of us individually imagine, that we only need to
identify.
Recently, I met Alan Shepp, who did a flying performance in 1972, involving
the use of geo data to isolate his flight paths. The installation involved
a film of the flight path playing in the gallery, while Alan simultaneously
flew over the same terrain. (From Hayward California to Kalamazoo Michigan -
2 days, 6 hours each day.) The work was entitled "A flight performance".
A related discussion would be the relationship between GIS, and practices
such as land art, earthworks, and other 'expanded field' practices. In any
case, thanks Christina, Teri, Melinda, and list at large. I'm falling off
here, but I will try to catch up with you in the future.
