[-empyre-] quickies for the panelists
A couple of quick questions/thoughts before I leave the office--I
realize that some of you may still be formulating responses, follow-ups,
etc., but here are some of my initial thoughts after reading the posts
so far:
Tobias, after being involved with microsound for a while now, do you
still think microsound is academic and sterile? Could you clarify your
argument against the pop music/art music dichotomy in microsound--do you
see microsound instead as existing somewhere in or near the non-binary
Afrologic nexus you mention?
Trace, could you talk more about your interest in seeing microsound
existing as simply one element in a larger mix, about how microsound
functions as an unseen layer, as an agent or catalyst? (I'd also like
to hear your thoughts on Debord's derive we talked about off-list.)
John K, not necessarily a question, but I really liked the following
passage from your curator's statement for the audible still life
project: "For as current art genres themselves seem to continually
fracture and blur boundaries as time goes on, many artists working today
have difficulty categorizing their works and methods within parameters
relevant as recently as twenty years ago. Painters are now also
sculptors, musicians are now also video artists, graphic designers are
now also sound artists, computer programmers are now also animators. As
art seeks to function within a society obsessed with the rapid dispersal
of information, so artists must seek multiple methods with which to make
their messages heard."
John H., I think I've accidentally deleted your intro message. :(
Okay, that's it for now.
