Unfortunately, I have not had much experience in a variety of
sound-making genres. I've been a drummer in a rock/pop band, created
soundtracks/sound effects for a handful of short films and
spoken-word recorded projects, and played
keyboards/bass/drums/electronics in an experimental duo besides what
I have produced on my own and have offered as examples to the list.
From this relatively tiny body of work, I can definitely say that
everything I have worked in so far has had an almost direct influence
on what I am doing today -- notions of self-editing, the technical
aspects of sound production, how to use sound to manipulate the
listener/audience are all things I've learned something about in
these various projects.
However, I've always worked on these projects in something of a
vacuum, and not been part of any sound-making community per se until
the last few years, when I met some other artists pursuing similar
interests. Once I created Stasisfield.com, I definitely felt a part
of a sound-making community, although what effect it will ultimately
have on my work is still happening, so it's difficult to comment
specifically on it.
I hope that comes close to approaching to provide you with something
of an answer! ;-)
