[-empyre-] graphic scores

With respect to Glenn's drawings there are numerous examples of artists
working under the influence of music. Viking Eggeling, Hans Richter and Paul
Klee amongst others worked with musical concepts in some of their artwork.

And, of course, Kandinsky. I'm familiar with Klee, but I will definitely look up the other two. While I'm primarily concerned with mostly non-musical sound, the connections are obviously relevant. Thanks for the tip.

Its worth looking at some of Stockhausen¹s scores and Francis Miroglio¹s
scores/drawings to see where drawing is part of the process toward
composition/performance.

I've been looking at graphic scores for a few years now, and I'm currently in discussion with John K. about his idea for a project involving the direction of ensembles from graphic scores. I haven't decided whether I will work with acoustic musicians or with an ensemble of laptops. The possibilities are interesting--having the score appear as wallpaper on each musician's screen, or some kind of local intranet linkage--I don't know enough about the technology. Anyone have any ideas?

I will definitely look up Miroglio.

Glenn, I like the spidery liveliness of your drawings, they are reminiscent
of the output of an ECG machine, you are like a sympathetic medium/tuning
fork for your auditory experience. I agree that they are Cy Twombly like,
they remind me also of the artist Mark Toby's work. I think both of these
painters worked with the Zen thing, present centred being, becoming a tool
for their subconscious I guess.

Thanks! Funny you should mention Tobey. I have a book on his city paintings, and they're out of this world. I've also been inspired by seeing photos long ago of scientific photographs of the movements of atoms. I don't have any current sources, so I'm referring to my memory of what they looked like--not to mention the synaesthetic quality of the spidery tracery.
