RE: [-empyre-] the symbolic and the real
Intrusion of 'game' into 'reality', dark comedy. Speaking of Bergson, his
'theory' of comedy: we feel OK about laughing at others when they behave
like machines, when their actions are 'automatic', unexamined; when they are
predictable.
Intrusion of 'game' into 'reality', dark comedy of 'communication'
"...whereas his men do not communicate, but rather make speeches at one
another. It is as if communication has been hived off and made the province
of Odysseus, the spin doctor." (NYRB, Oct 9/03, p4)
Intrusion of 'game' into 'reality', dark comedy of the art competition,
economy of attention.
The rule-based procedure, the 'game', the model rising into the territory.
The map is not the territory, but when there are worlds within worlds, it
can be, not neatly nested, or the scene of the power, if not the territory.
But, then, we continue to think to continue, despite all the rules.
Our own power, not power that can be bestowed.
Not despite, but because of all this, the role of the 'game' in art is
currently most intriguing.
