True enough. But the distinction to me is crucial. When I was curating in
Atlanta, we had up to 3000 at a single opening - few email lists are that
large. And not all of them were artists - there were a lot of curious
people. Events like that - and not-for-profits also have in general strong
outreach programs into the schools and other community venues - bring a
melding of community and artist. We showed a great number of so-called
folk artists (a term I've written against btw), all sorts of people, Susan
Meiselas curated a show of El Salvadoran war photography. I've not seen
the like on any email list - they tend, like empyre, to be relatively
cloistered.
