In his classic work "Raízes do Brasil" (Roots of Brazil), historian Sérgio
Buarque de Holanda writes that the Brazilian experience is unique: we
constitute a unique, vast and effective effort to transplant European
culture in a tropical and sub-tropical region. As a result of our process of
civilization, our culture has always valued foreigners, and our art-both
tropicalist and anthropophagic-habitually values and devours everything that
comes from abroad, recycling it and returning it to the circuit with our own
distinctive timber.



This paragraph above is the basis of Brazilian culture and two movements of
Art of last century were just about this:



1-  Movement Anthropophagic (1922)



2- Movement Tropicalist ( 1968 )



The Movement Tropicalist reveals certain coincidence of proposal with
Tropicalia by the fine artist and, why not philosopher, Hélio Oiticica. The
composer, singer and poet Caetano Veloso is the most  representative
illustration of Tropicalism. Fragmentation of texts and  courtship with mass
media communication were their characteristics. Both, Tropicália and
Tropicalism turned unstable the experiences of Brazilian vanguard and
hegemonic cultural interpretations.

Below three portions of Tropicalist songs mixed: (Alegria, Alegria  /
Happiness, Happiness, Tropicália and Superbacana). Reading them you may
understand better what Tropicalism was.

*SuperBacana means a very nice guy but is a joke with SuperMan too.
