Once Benjamin said, Eternal recurrence is the
punishment of being held back in school, projected
onto the cosmic sphere: humanity has to copy out its
text in endless repetitions. This bitter reflection
casts a melancholic light on the work-of-art essay. In
this context, noise is eternal recurrence of the
punishment. Let me say that only a perception of noise
and technological media that can grasp the nexus with
punishment can interest me.
All the fascinating figures of Benjamin (From
Baudelaire, Proust and Kafka to …Angle of History)
deal with this conception of noise as the punishment.
This is why noisy illness of Proust-the wheezing of my
breath is drowning out the sounds of my pen and of a
bath which is being drawn on the floor
below-interested Benjamin. The noiseless world, or
history of redeemed humanity, is the destruction of
this punishment, but, as Kafka said, the messiah will
only come when he is no longer necessary, he will only
come after his arrival, he will come not on the last
day, but on the very last day. Technological Media's
practitioners only by understanding this punishment
can send a SOS. As Benjamin wrote from Berlin to
Scholem, 17 April 1931: "good, I am reaching an
extreme. Someone who has been shipwrecked, who carries
on while drifting on the wreckage, by climbing to the
peak of the mast that is already crumbling. But he has
a chance of sending out an SOS from up there."
