[-empyre-] mobile media
Hi all,
This topic is one that is closely related to my PhD research - as I look at
the notion of public versus private on the Internet and with mobile media. I
agree with Jenny's comment that the notion of a singular identity is well
past - and this was discussed in some of the feminist literature that Ana
mentioned from the 1990s - particular the Nomadic subjects text.
What we have now is something that is far more intertwined and 'augmented' -
to borrow from Lev Manovich's "Learning from Prada" essay. For example -
people in Japan use their mobile devices to access the internet and you can
send sms to each other using the Internet.
The arguments of what is an 'authentic' identity that seemed to dominate in
the 1990s seem redundant now. There doesn't appear to be any form of
communication that has more cred than another.
I have found some interesting articles that I have listed below if anyone is
interested. There is a lot of research in the area of Social Sciences about
the notion of space and identity that is very relevant to mobile discussions
and the formulation of Internet relationships.
