Welcome to April 2008 discussion  on -empyre- soft-skinned space:   “Wired
Sustainability.”

This month's discussion is moderated by Renate Ferro (US) and Tim Murray
(US) with Britta Riley (US), Rebecca Bray (US), Patricia R. Zimmermann
(US), Thomas Shevory (US), Stephanie Rothenberg (US), Dale Hudson (US),
Sharon Lin Tay (Singapore/UK), Ulises A. Mejias (US), Amanda McDonald

"Wired Sustainability"
How do wired art practices, environments, and interventions contribute to
the discourse on sustainability?   Profiting from three New York area
international exhibitions at Eyebeam, the Finger Lakes Environmental Film
Festival, and Exit Art, our discussion will consider the intersections
between environmental, social, economic, aesthetic, and media based
strategies in dealing responsibly with our environmental resources,
particularly in view of intersections between the real world and virtual
space. Through social collaboration and portable communication tactics,
the interdisciplinary territory between art, science, and technology
incorporates installation, performance, net-art, data-mapping,
electronics, among many others. How do we understand and practice the
complex interactions that occur between the technological, social and
natural systems that we inhabit.

with special guests

 Rebecca Bray is a new media artist and designer whose work focuses on the
invisible worlds of systems that surround us. She is Co-Founder of
Submersible Design and has served as Sustainability Facilitator at
Eyebeam, New York.

Amanda McDonald Crowley is Executive Director of Eyebeam, New York.  She
previously served as Executive Director of ISEA2004 and Director of the
Australian Network for Art and Technology (ANAT).

Dale Hudson is a film, video, and new media theorist and curator who is a
Visiting Assistant Professor at Amherst College. His research examines
cinema and new media in relation to racialization, nationalism,
immigration, and globalization, particularly within the contexts of the
United States, France, and India. He is Co-Curator of the 2008 FLEFF
online digital art exhibition, ubuntu.kuqala.

Ulises Mejias is a techno-cultural theorist whose research interests
include networked sociality, the philosophy of technology, and learning
design. His work focuses mainly on the use of the network as a model for
organizing and mediating social realities. He is Assistant Professor of
New Media at SUNY Oswego.

Brita Riley co-founded Submersible Design
<http://www.submersibledesign.com>, which consults with museums and
environmental non-profits on the presentation of in-depth content in
exhibitions and digital media. As an artist, she is committed to the
continued evolution of the human senses and believes increased sensory
potential correlates with the motivation toward and efficacy of
environmental stewardship.

Stephanie Rothenberg is a new media artist working at the intersection of
art and technology and is an Assistant Professor of Visual Studies at the
University of Buffalo where she teaches communication design and emergent
practices.   (She is the Women Direct new media artist in residence at
FLEFF, The Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival this month). Her
interdisciplinary practice merges performance, installation, and networked
media to create solicitous interactions that question the boundaries and
social constructs of manufactured desires.

Thomas Shevory is Co-Director of the Finger Lakes Environmental Film
Festival (http://www.ithaca.edu/fleff) and Professor and chair of Politics
at Ithaca College, Ithaca, New York. He is the author of five books on
health and environment and writes on law, public policy, popular music and
popular culture.

Sharon Lin Tay is a film, video, and new media theorist and curator. She
is working on projects about digital cinemas and the contemporary
political documentary, and is a Lecturer in film studies at Middlesex
University in London, where she teaches film theory, world cinema, and
digital culture. He is Co-Curator of the 2008 FLEFF online digital art
exhibition, ubuntu.kuqala.

Patricia R. Zimmermann is Co-Director of the Finger Lakes Environmental
Film Festival (http://www.ithaca.edu/fleff) at and Professor of cinema,
photography and media arts at Ithaca College, Ithaca, New York. She is
recognized internationally as an author and curator on amateur and
documentary film, women’s cinema, and new media.
