In 2009 I intend to start, increasingly and systematically, migrating from
proprietary software to freeware and shareware, and to upload my music
digitally to creative commons-license sites. Perhaps the entire process
will take me longer than a single year, but this is an important project I
shall pursue for all my own work. I will also encourage my fellow
musicians, web designers and students to do the same. Hopefully, this way
we can all create together a better digital future.
Gabriela Vargas-Cetina (Mexico) is an anthropologist who teaches at
the Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan with interests in contemporary
life and culture. Her field work in Mexico, Canada, and Italy has
focused on organizations with an emphasis on rural cooperatives.
Since 2001, she has been conducting research on the politics
surrounding sound and music. She has been collecting sounds and
noises during fieldwork and everyday life to compose a broad range of
music through her guitars and sound effects. She has played with jazz
and rock bands and with folk groups in Mexico, Canada and Italy, and
has performed solo live in Mexico and the United States. As of 2008,
She has been reflecting on higher education and the future of the
university.
