Actually, there is the use of "complicity" in Hal Foster's  text "Subversive Signs" published in 1985 in "Recodings: Art, Spectacle, Cultural Politics." He speaks there at length about the tactic of "subversive complicity" in the work of Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, Cindy Sherman, and others....
