Just quickly, I shouldn't have mouthed off about Foster et al., 
especially from memory away from home and resources.  "Subversive 
complicity" sounds so much like what most of us are asking for that I'm 
reminded how as usual he said what I'm trying to say. 

Greg Ulmer's historicizing of metaphysics is also very helpful.  Of 
course, it's also obvious how long now it's been cracking under 
assaults, much as it was part of a Derridean project to point to its 
survival in unexpected places.  Indeed, one interpretation of 
formalism's stress on the art object is to keep art firmly in this world.
