Sure. 'Network intimacy' (not sure it's such a good term, albeit poetic), is
only possible in the context of the above examples due to a social contract
implemented around rules of mutual respect, the ground of trust.
Rather than reducing social anxiety (the awkward party solved in drink) it's an
implemention around common respect (ie an abstraction) for the Topic (project,
game, subject, codebase, workgroup interest) in question.
In the scope of a darknet, what's being protected is the common interest and
also safety of fellow users from the likes of MPAA, RIAA, Prince, pesky black
helicopters.
I've been using Internet Relay Chat for around 10 years. Channels are grouped
by interest, mostly of a technical nature. IRC channels often have a convention
where channel rules are written in the topic, made available to you the moment
you join. Anyone can come and go, but if you're off-topic, rude to channel
members, hit enter too many times or a generally you are likely to be kicked,
perhaps banned (excluded with the intent of permanence). It's very different
from a EULA, a socially adhered intolerance in respect of the health of the
group and its interest.
A grandfather to many current generation online communites, it continues to work
very well..
For your reference, this is what I saw when logging into the channel #debian on
the Freenode server. It's an interesting little insight.
Note there have been 35659 different interest groups (channels) created one the
Freenode network alone, some of then well over a decade old. The channel #debian
has 969 users at present, most lurking, some chatting, others getting problems
solved, most learning.
At the end is a statement passed to me from a bot called 'dpkg' that defines
exclusion around group patrolled behaviour.
