You might also take a close look at Bernard Stiegler's Technics and Time,
Vol I (as well as David Barison and Daniel Ross's film, The Ister).

Steigler's discussion of culture and its relation to (its dependence on)
agriculture is very, very interesting.  It doesn't fly in the face of
anything you are saying here, rather, Stiegler emphasizes the temporal
element and the various scales at which our technical being progresses (and,
in the context of his larger body of work, ties it in with the critical
interdependence of the individual and community).

To reflect on the sort of real stakes that Simon Biggs points to (like
Monsanto), I think that Stiegler's arguement is important.  It is not
particularly political in any sort of radically progressive way, nor is it
"humanist" in any sort of reactionary way, yet he manages to make a great
argument for a culture which is, in fact, a culture.
