Thankyou for the introduction.

As Melinda has said, I am an artist dividing my time between China and
Australia. My fascinations run from cities, to Borges and to my latest
obsession--lever coffee machines.

In 2009, I co-founded the Donkey Institute of Contemporary Art (DICA) an
initiative dedicated to supporting experimental contemporary art on the
back of a donkey (www.donkeyinstitute.net). We travel the streets of
Beijing making exhibitions, libraries and events.

Currently, I am happily preoccupied giving lectures about cities broadly
titled 'Cities: from flux to now'. The lectures are concerned with
reconsidering the city and breaking with contemporary city thinking. I
talk about new views on the city and my desire to go beyond our known
positions on it, a need to confront its clichés and ultimately move pass
our inaction. The lectures dismantle urban theory from the last sixty
years and state new terms for the city in art, architecture, philosophy
and city planning. The lectures travel to various cites.

My works often deal with intervention in public space
(www.michaelyuen.com.au). Light, sound and performance are my usual
mediums. I grew up playing baroque and renaissance recorders and trained
as an electronic music composer learning on old Moog synthesizers and
now slightly outdated software. The gravity of the concert hall didn’t
interest me. So, public spaces were the next step.

With this current trend to threw spotlights on China, at the conclusion
of Shanghai Expo and beginning of Guangzhou Asian Games, I look forward
to people's thoughts on media art, art and China's public spaces.
