[-empyre-] pirates, pirating pirates/duration tangent

Dear empyreans & Jussi Parikka,

tangential: but when, Jussi, you used the word capture to describe what
happens to time, how it is captured by the mechanisms of piracy, in
increments, piece-wise, by advertising; and your time, your personal
time, in other words, duration: I was taken to the world of the wasp &
orchid.

Here the capture is by camouflage, to the manner born, the orchid
becoming wasp-like; and in consequence the wasp becoming a medium for
the orchid's reproduction by carrying pollen, adding a surplus-value of
code. And the mutual deterritorialisations invoked.

I thought... well, advertising does this, becoming culture-like,
song-like, affecting before it is effective, evoking Emotion. It
captures affective duration. An infestation of time-eaters scuppering
the hulks. The illusion of personal time, taking time-out in dry-dock?

Or the sleight-of-hand whereby the personal becomes medium - adding the
surplus-value of 'attention' - attention signifying nothing more than
its capture by advertising. The completion of the cycle whereby the
affective association - to piracy - effectively makes off with, hacks,
pirates, or pillages the 'treasure' - which is itself, piracy.

best,

Simon Taylor
