Have to say, although I haven't yet got out to the Sabanci site, what I am hearing does not sound far off what I expected. This is my first ISEA since the third, in Sydney (I also participated in the first and second - Utrecht and Groningen). After that I stopped going, firstly because I was an independent artist and without institutional backing I couldn't justify the expense, secondly as I felt the event was becoming corporatised and normalised (although I am aware that some ISEA's have not been like that). Currently I am with an institution and involved in a project that benefits from being presented here in Istanbul so for the first time in ten years it makes sense to attend. What I will make of it I am not sure. But Istanbul has been a total revelation and inspiration. I expected it to be wonderful and surprising and it has fulfilled that expectation and surprised me in ways I had not expected (not only the monumentality, history and natural beauty of the city but also the friendly and generous people).

So, I'm happy I am here.
