empyre is a list best approached in plaintext mode. The question marks that appear everywhere are due to the listserv software not understanding certain characters or character sets. If people submitting to the list could switch their mail clients to plaintext then these typographic intrusions can be minimised. The downside is that rich text styling is lost. Perhaps we can view the technical limitations of listerv software as a metaphor for academia? (question mark intended) When you use language or discursive form that is outside the bounds of normal academic practice then others just see all these question marks...
