Thanks Simon and Sue.  This "virtual embodiment" theme has indeed proved
highly open to interpretation in past weeks, fleetingly followed from over
"embedded" state in academic quotidian demands... Grist I'd wish to throw
into the mill has to do with the necessary entanglement and mixed-ness of
these key terms. So obvious it needs to be constantly reiterated. I'm
coming at this from interests in sound (resonance, notions of "sounding
out" spaces, tuning and frequencies), and gesture via creative instrumental
practices in music, puppetry, juggling, magic (handling, touch, instruments
as interfaces). In other words, practices that, via engagement with (often
analogue) interfaces, effectively contribute to the "scaffolding" (Andy
Clarke) of our cognitive models, thus entrainment, experience. Without
which Oculus Rifts, Kinects, Wiis and other momentarily radical technical
devices (anyway doomed to rapid obsolescence) are dead in the water.



I'd see Simon's notions of assemblage and dispositif as useful insofar as
we are clearly PART OF THEM (as he suggests). Likewise Barad's
"apparatuses" which are not "mere static arrangements in the world, but
rather dynamic (re-)configurings of the world, specific agential practices/
intra-actions, performances through which specific exclusionary boundaries
are enacted." The breakdown of hierarchised frameworks to envisage,
negotiate, and trial novel forms of agency that allow for new sitings and
emergences ("emurgencies" - Sher Doruff) of liveness... Thanks Garth for
your framework, whose porosity (sub-)dimension brings to mind a text
co-authored with Steve Benford, Blast Theory and others back in 1999 on
"Pushing Mixed Reality Boundaries", which discusses boundary "permeability"
(visibility, audibility, solidity) to characterise links between different
categories of space/ experience, boundary "situation" (location, alignment,
mobility, segmentation, spatial consistency), and boundary "dynamics"
("lifetime" and configurability). It also develops what we called
"tesselating boundaries":  "multiple boundaries are used to join together
many different physical and virtual spaces into a larger integrated
structure called a tessellated mixed reality", akin to Foucault's
heterotopia. I find these kinds of framework concepts useful for thinking
through the multiple species of spaces and experiences evoked by, e.g.,
"virtual embodiment". Basically I'm interested in trying to think through
and juggle with what have previously constituted boundaries and
categorisations, in order to elicit new conjectures/ apprehensions of
species of liveness.
