Dear Rhiannon,

I think this is a really important question. In important ways, "the digital" just intensifies effects that were already present, so the new is more of a quantitative than a qualitative thing. As the slope of the curve of change steepens, it's hard to identify the moment where "more" really means "different".

The places where the digital seems qualitatively significant to me are:

1. Translation of formalisms into systems that operate at non-human scale. So for instance: we have had metadata for a long time, and we've had controlled vocabularies in our metadata for a long time. But digital systems allow us to act on that data through (familiar) mechanisms of sorting, indexing, and extraction that operate on millions of records in a manageably short period of time. Those quantitative improvements (scale, speed) do amount to a qualitative difference, inasmuch as prior to the digital age, these functions were simply out of reach.

2. Exact reproducibility: the fact that copying a digital file produces an informationally identical digital file. This fact underlies critical systems like version control, transmission of information across distance, distributed processing, and other dramatically novel systems which underlie the more deceptively familiar-looking ("gosh, I'm still just writing words as if it was a typewriter") systems we use regularly.

3. Data manipulation and transformation, including reversibility of processes: the fact that one can perform systematic, exactly repeatable changes on a data set (including things we don't think of as "data sets" in the research sense). This fact makes it possible to treat data as a mutable resource from which we can derive varying views and outputs.

Another way to ask your question is to turn it around: if the important things about the digital (e.g. formalism) are things that pre-date the digital, how far back do they go? How *old* is the digital (rather than how new)? Asking the question this way might put us on an interesting path backwards through library science and the history of information management, including things like those clever perforated cards that allowed you to physically extract all of the cards on a specific topic by sticking a needle through the appropriate set of holes, or those colored stickers they use to categorize file folders at the doctor's office, things like that. These are non-"digital" examples of formalisms that also work at large scale.
