I agree that the +/- arousal sense of pleasure / fear is too simplistic
and probably introduces more issues unnecessarily. What I had in mind
was arousal, as unexpected outcome, where that outcome is desired
(positive) or not (negative). A person could certainly want to be
frightened and find pleasure in it. This would make the arousal in this
context positive, contrary to my previous characterization. Again, I
think this is not central to the notion of a baseline of habituation and
arousal as a sense of the unexpected.
