Hello empyre!
Thanks for the invitation to participate, and in advance to all for what is sure to be an engaging conversation. And thank you Sherry for kicking off the conversation, in addition to ALL that you have done and continue to do!
Recently the "memories" function on Facebook reminded me that yesterday marks the anniversary of the Great Flood of Owego, back in 2011. While the ETC studio, which at that point had ceased operating as a residency space, did not suffer from the flood, the disaster resulted in an expedited move of the video library to Cornell University. It's exciting to know that the Center's paper archives and ephemera are now united with this A/V collection, and I look forward to learning how all of these materials will be made publicly accessible.
As a curator I have found that a chance to exhibit is a chance to preserve. Exhibitions have often led to the preservation of artist projects--either by requiring the resurrection of early electronic art works or the migration of media to new presentation platforms. When the Center produced its phenomenal DVD box set "Experimental Television Center: 1969-2009" many contributing artists benefited from the opportunity to preserve their early analog videos. I also look forward to learning more about the Hunter exhibition and how it has inspired the preservation of early ETC works.
