This video was constructed using extra high-resolution images, as a visual
space across which “camera vision” travels. Section by section, moving
through the surface of the lens-based image, the surveying of detailed
information is transformed into fields of color and narrative. The camera,
in this case is actually, a computer programmed crop path, traveling
through 3GB digital image fields, using the core spatial and temporal
syntax of the moving image: pan, tilt, zoom, sequence. The foundational
images are derived from original large format sheet film.

Tonight I would like to invite you to view a short video work titled *There,
before, *2014. A droning camera surveys landscape formations finding points
of depth on the surface of the image. A meteorite named Akaba, which fell
near Ma’an, Jordan in 1949, reveals the story. There, before opens with an
anecdote inspired by the proto-science fiction narrative, Awaj bin Anfaq
written by the thirteenth century thinker Zakariya Al-Qazwini, about a
being that came to earth from a distant planet. The film unfolds into a
contemplative sequence of associations and subjunctive fragments on
climate, resources, and geologic time in connection with the Anthropocene
age of human impact.
