Regarding feminist data, I am optimist so I would argue that yes, it’s possible that feminists may be the victims of having their data coopted. However, feminists have also done a lot (and will hopefully do a lot more!) to improve the methodologies surrounding data collection and interpretation.
A good example for data being re-interpreted in a feminist way can be found in Carol Gilligan’s book “In a Different Voice” from 1981. Gilligan examines scoring methods used by Lawrence Kohlberg, a developmental psychologist most famous for a theory about the moral development of children. Kohlberg found that at the age of eleven, girls were at a lower stage of moral maturity then their male counterparts. Gilligan re-examined Kohlberg’s methodology of data interpretation and found that girls don’t see moral dilemmas like “math problem with humans” which leads to them being rated lower than the boys in terms of development even if that is not actually the case.
The fact that data is accepted as a universal measure shows how oftentimes “results” are published in a sensationalist way without revealing the methodologies behind how the data was collected and analyzed. So data as universal measure may be a symptom of a lack of transparency and sensationalism. I think it would be great to have tools for a general public to treat data as politics and be able to follow a researcher’s reasoning more closely rather than having to accept the results. Also, we need more feminist researchers to challenge results in the spirit of Carol Gilligan!
Regarding my own work: I think it makes total sense to question why I am using the male/female dichotomy. I think that if I could collect more data points, I would but I cannot. Data is a communication strategy, especially quantitative data. Somebody at MIT once told me “if you want to talk to engineers, use numbers”. I do want to talk to people who value numbers, but I also want to talk to people who value more subtle things, like the fact that the project uses a lot of objects/machines related to domestic work (like the vacuum cleaner, the heat gun, the pies).
