Re: [-empyre-] "The Psychiatrist, Net.art/Web.art and other stories"
Dear Jim,
> Well, opening up to other possibilities is sometimes hard, isn't it.
That is it new or unexpected things always frighten or provoke a sensation
of insecurity.
>If somebody has an expectation of what a game on a computer (or a work of
art) should be like, and the work doesn't fit that idea, then they are most
likely to pass on the work rather than look more closely at what *is* there
and look also at their assumptions about how it should be.
Well, with me it is rather different. If I have an expectation of what a
game on a computer (or a work of
art) should be like, and the work doesn't fit that idea, it functions just
as a challenge for me and while I do not decifrate it I am not satisfied.
However it is my way, I know.

This work has a very special quality in my opinion: it speaks about very
serious things with sense of humour. It occurs because of the excellent
and ironic text of Machado de Assis, perhaps the best Brazilian Author.
However Machado de Assis does not belong to Magic Realism. There are some
translations of his books in English (Search Amazon :
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/102-6746431-6305737 )
1. Dom Casmurro (Library of Latin America)
by Joaquim M. Machado de Assis (Editor), John A. Gledson (Foreword)
(Paperback - September 1998)
2. The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas
by Joaquim Maria Machado De Assis, et al (Paperback - December 1998)
I do recommend the reading of these books.
It is interesting to say that Magic Realism in Brazil is inexpressive, in
spite of our completely "Magic Reality" of every day. Magic Realism belongs
much more to Spanish America. I think that everybody knows the Colombian
Gabriel Garcia Marques (excellent) and some of the Argentine writers I have
cited in a previous email.
A sunny Brazilian day to all of you,
Regina
