RE: [-empyre-] Raquel Paricio opening statement

Dear Guilherme;
Thank you very much for your interest in the project.
I have just uploaded the last article that I had presented recently in ACM
2005 in which you can have more information about the artistic installation,
and therefore from the interface.
You can access it directly at:
http://www.clonclon.com/poetic_cubes/poetic_cubes_ACM_proceedings.pdf

>>I've seen your site and it is very intriguing! I'd like to know if the
research you are doing aims in a certain extent the manufacturing of a piece
of art.

In fact the POEtic project is a basic research action by itself, trying to
develop new electronic substrates with bio-inspired capabilities for general
purpose applications.
The POEtic Cubes project uses the basic substrate resulting from the POEtic
project to create a multi-sensory artistic installation. The main goal of
the artistic installation is to work on improvement methods for both
perception and apperception in order to achieve new consciousness levels.
Therefore the technology developed by the POEtic project constitutes a
perfect candidate for attaining these objectives. This is due to the fact
that bio-inspired principles permit to fit and adapt to the specific
characteristics of the environment without external user intervention.

>> This is a major issue, since it implies in cybernetics of second order.
I'd like to know if the work of Heinz von Foerster inspires your work. I
guess so, because the expressions "autonomous evolutionary", "self-repair",
"self-replication" are all over your site. (It recalls me also Maturana).
This is one of the most important discussions I've seen here in this list.
Please, Rachel, specify what kind of interfaces you are developing for
POetic. In my researching, I've came across with two kinds of interfaces:
the first one is a subject/object type interface, which implies in a
separation between the two entities; the second one is an object/object type
interface, which implies in a blurring of the frontiers between the two
entities. The terms "subject" and "object" don't have any defined
connotation here and have just an instrumental function (an object could be
an "quasi-object", for instance). Anyway, I'm neither a scientist nor an
artist; I'm just a tech journalist interested in these issues. I'd love to
discuss this with people with more scientific background than me.

In fact, as you can see in the paper I have referenced before, adaptation is
for us a major issue as it is for Maturana and other biologists.
Regarding the interface question in the POEtic-Cubes installation the
interface has been held as simple as possible. This means that in our case
it is the installation that should be adapting in real time to the user
actions, and not the opposite. The user has just to move around in order to
experience how the installation is changing according to her/his actions.

I hope this may clarify your questions and open new ones.

Cheers

Raquel Paricio

>> The first point of our research is to facilitate the development of
attention, i.e., to be conscious of our attention or of our perceptions
(that is what Leibniz termed "apperception"). In my opinion this is the
previous step to acquire new levels of consciousness.
