Forgive me for jumping into this dialogue randomly and with possibly  
irrelevant comments but...

Has anyone been relating this to von Neumann and Morgenstern's  
"Theory of Games and Economic Behaviour" (1944) and the subsequent  
work at the Rand Corp. (where von Neumann was a consultant) that  
framed so much of the international political and economic dialogue/ 
policy in the latter half of the twentieth century. Also Rand  
"designed" the internet as a communication system that could survive  
any endgame.  Maynard Smith picked this up in the 70's and applied it  
to a hard-core selfish-gene model of evolution.
