I love the hitchhiker/car owner dyad: excellent metaphor It takes me directly to Debord's notion of detournement as critical aesthetic practice. For Debord, I must operate within, not outside of, capital, which subsumes everything, even its antithesis, through the perfect act of sublation. Like de Certeau, with his wigs (La Perruque), Debord offers a guerrilla tactics of employing existing materials, but diverting them toward different aims (the material cause may remain the same, but the final cause is entirely different). One incipient example might be Dada orthography, with its erratic slices and re-positionings. Installation art, such as an Ann Hamilton "situaton," also involves the repurposing and re-contextualizing of objects and items in novel, detoured ways. Finally, there is always the "Reification" of the situation in performance art, both in terms of the intervening and unexpected public spectacle (for example, Michael Alig's Outlaw Parties in the NYC of the early 90s, or the Flash Mob of today), as well as "legitimized" spectacles taking place on a proscenium (Kiki & Herb's 2006 Broadway show at the Helen Hayes theatre, for example).
I hope these reflections on aesthetic praxis within capital are helpful at breaking down some of the tension between Joe and Anna, both of whom have excellent points about the power--and impotence--of art. Clearly, art can do more than merely decorate, and what is at stake is imagining its posibilities within a moment of present crisis.
