I think that Geoffrey Miller (

the right idea here: it is a mating strategy.
We do collaborative work for free to show off the peacock's tail that is our mind.
The fact that doing such work gives great and immediate inner satisfaction is
exactly what you'd expect an evolved mating strategy to feel like emotionally.
