I have written a short essay published in a book on curating in Asia published in 2010 in which I drew a parallel between the figures of the curator, the listener and of the amateur.
It hat derives from my experience as an artist that works with sound that you might find relevant, and can be read here http://www.moneme.com/whocares/ or here http://www.moneme.com/download/UncuredLunatics_s.pdf
It might be a humble contribution to the discussion that you may find relevant
Best,
Cedric
