They might be a bit blue-chip aspirational Marina, but there are some pretty great examples of artist-run-restaurants there. 

Matta Clark and Goodden's FOOD was of course seminal, and a super important project https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FOOD

I'm always a bit sad that Miralda and Montse Guillen's El International never makes it to these lists. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Internacional_(New_York_City)

It was daring and brilliant, and they had video art menus (in the mid 80s!) and wonderful weekly news print publications, performance art and events...

Of the contemporary projects mentioned here, Conflict Kitchen is without doubt one of the most daring and wonderful projects on this list. 

The Hirst / Pharmacy project probably the most dreary...
